The division between Scottish Water, the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) and Aberdeenshire Council were apparent last month with the buck-passing going on over who is to blame for flooding in Stonehaven. But if anything this is even more worrying.
Scottish Water have been convicted and fined for releases from its sewage treatment plant at Durris. And it may be that treating sewage is difficult and the occasional problem can be forgiven. But what happened next? SEPA served a notice which entitles them to a report on what took place - and Scotish Water failed to comply with that Notice. Sheriff Davis took a dim view, and fined Scottish Water £4000 for the pollution and another £1000 for withholding information.
Scottish Water were also charged with dumping sewage in the Durris burn, but that charge was dismissed.
Meanwhile the UK government is battling with the EU, arguing that the waste water treatment obligations are being met. Really?!?
